Welcome to Our Annual Education Buyer’s Guide
In this guide, we look at a wide range of projectors made for K-12 schools, colleges, and museums. When picking the best models, we focus on how well they work in real educational settings.
Before we start, it’s important to recognize how much COVID-19 has changed education. Teachers have found new ways to engage students both in classrooms and online. Many schools and museums went virtual last year, and technology use in classrooms has grown a lot. Interactive projectors are becoming popular, letting students in class and at home see the same content live.
Even as more students come back to school, the pandemic’s effects will likely shape teaching for years. One good thing is that both teachers and students are now more comfortable using tech in learning.
As schools reopen with social distancing, projectors help by allowing bigger screens. For K-12, a screen 90 inches or larger works best, and for colleges, 100 inches or more is ideal. Smaller screens (like 60 inches) don’t work well in bigger or spaced-out classrooms. Check out our “Equivalent Visibility Rule” for more info.
At Projector Reviews, we’re curious about what long-term changes will happen. For now, we believe schools will keep investing in tools that make learning more interactive and fun. We think immersive projection will be an important part of that.
Projector Types in This Guide — And Why They Matter
This report covers different types of projectors based on how schools use them:
Standard Projectors: Mostly for K-12 classrooms, these are affordable and budget-friendly since many schools have tight budgets.
Large Venue Projectors: Common in colleges for big lecture halls, but also used in auditoriums or multi-purpose rooms at all school levels.
High-End/Specialty Projectors: Designed for digital displays and projection mapping, often used in museums or special exhibits.
Each type includes standard and ultra-short throw models. Some have features like lens shift or interchangeable lenses that affect price and installation. Many offer different levels of interactivity, which is becoming more popular in education.
We focus on how projectors perform in real use, not just specs. Our awards go to models that work well in actual classrooms and learning spaces.
What’s Inside This Year’s Guide
We reviewed dozens of projectors and picked about 20 that are great for education. Each comes with a short summary and a link to a full review if you want to learn more.
Many models have “siblings” — similar versions with small differences like resolution or wireless features. So these 20 represent nearly 100 projector options available today.
Some models might look familiar from past reports because projectors usually stay on the market for 2 to 4 years. We note which won awards last year and highlight this year’s new winners.
As schools get ready for the new school year and summer upgrades, we hope this guide helps you make smart choices.
We carefully select projectors that offer the best value and features for education.
Thank you to all the teachers who kept educating through a tough year. We hope this guide makes your technology choices easier and helps you create better, more engaging learning spaces.
FEATURES TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING AN EDUCATION PROJECTOR

How to Choose a Projector for Education
When picking a projector for school or classroom use, keep these key points in mind:
How Much Brightness Do You Need?
Brightness is measured in lumens and depends on your room’s lighting.
Recommended Brightness for a 100″ Screen:
Very bright room, no light control: 5000+ lumens
Bright room, some light control: 3500–5000 lumens
Room with good light control: 2000–3500 lumens
Room you can fully darken: 800–2000 lumens
How Much Resolution Do You Need?
Resolution means how many pixels the projector shows. Higher resolution means a sharper picture.
Common Resolutions in Education Projectors:
Type | Resolution | Aspect Ratio |
---|---|---|
SVGA* | 800 x 600 | 4:3 |
WVGA* | 853 x 480 | 16:9 |
XGA | 1024 x 768 | 4:3 |
WXGA | 1280 x 800 | 16:10 |
WUXGA | 1920 x 1200 | 16:10 |
1080p | 1920 x 1080 | 16:9 |
4K UHD | 3840 x 2160 | 16:9 |
*SVGA and WVGA are older, mostly outdated resolutions.
Many schools still use old low-res projectors, but they need replacing. Newer projectors last longer and save money on bulb replacements.
XGA usually replaces SVGA. WXGA, WUXGA, or 1080p replace older low-res models.
What Are Your Installation Needs?
Think about where and how you’ll install the projector:
Where will it be placed?
How easy is maintenance?
How long do you need it to last?
What inputs and controls do you need?
Features to consider include laser light sources, filters, lens shift, interchangeable lenses, keystone correction, blending, and remote monitoring.
What Presentation Tools Do You Need?
The way you plan to use the projector will decide what tools and features you need—like interactivity, wireless options, or special display modes.
Standard Projectors: K-12 Classroom
Standard K-12 classroom projectors are smaller and come with helpful features like advanced networking, wireless options, collaboration tools, and PC-Free Presenting. These features make them great for schools. The main job of a projector in a K-12 classroom is to show presentations and course materials. Choosing the right projector depends mostly on the classroom environment, like lighting, and the specific features you need.

EPSON PRO L1755UNL
The Epson Pro L1755UNL is a bright, powerful laser projector made for large venues. It has 15,000 lumens and a WUXGA resolution (1920×1200), and can handle 4K content using a pixel-shifting technology that makes the image sharper.
Epson’s L-Series includes eight models, with brightness levels from 6,000 to 30,000 lumens. The L1755UNL sits in the middle, weighs about 52 pounds (without the lens), and comes in black or white.
Key features:
Laser Light Engine: Uses two blue lasers—one creates red and yellow with phosphor wheels, the other handles blue. A prism mixes the colors into a full, vibrant image.
Pixel Shifting: Though not true 4K, pixel shifting improves detail by moving pixels slightly to sharpen the image when showing 4K content.
Projection Mapping & Edge Blending: Lets you project images onto unusual shapes like curved surfaces or 3D objects, great for concerts or museums. You can also blend images from multiple projectors into one seamless, large picture. However, edge blending can’t be used at the same time as pixel shifting.
