Casio XJ-S400UN Business/Education Projector Review

The Casio XJ-S400UN is part of Casio’s new Superior series, featuring their next-gen mercury-free hybrid laser and LED light engine. Announced in January, this series also includes a dust-resistant design that improves cooling and protects the projector’s insides—even in dusty environments.

This DLP projector is made for business and education use, like all Casio models. It has WUXGA (1920×1200) resolution and is compact enough to be portable, so you can easily move it between conference rooms or classrooms. With a bright 4,000-lumen output, it’s strong enough to handle the ambient light you find in K-12 classrooms, boardrooms, retail spaces, and museums.

As usual, I’ll start this review with an overview and highlights, then dive into its special features. After that, we’ll explore the hardware, picture quality, and performance before wrapping up with a summary and a look at how it compares to the competition.

Overview

The Casio XJ-S400UN is a business and education projector with WUXGA (1920×1200) resolution and DLP technology. It uses Casio’s upgraded R-Laser & LED Hybrid Light Source, which lasts up to 20,000 hours. While this lifespan is common for Casio and other laser or LED projectors, it’s still impressive.

With a typical 180-day school year, 20,000 hours means the projector can last about 18 years if used six hours a day. Since 4K isn’t yet needed in most schools or businesses, the WUXGA resolution will be more than enough for years to come.

With 4,000 lumens, this projector easily handles bright rooms like classrooms and offices. It offers plenty of input options and a 1.70:1 zoom lens for flexible placement.

Since it has no lamps or filters, the XJ-S400UN is almost maintenance-free. While it costs more upfront at $1,949.99 compared to lamp-based projectors, you save money long-term by avoiding lamp and filter replacements. It’s basically a plug-and-play, set-it-and-forget-it device.

The XJ-S400UN supports easy fleet management with Crestron RoomView, letting you control multiple projectors—even from different brands. It has wired LAN and optional wireless LAN (with a dongle). Plus, it includes many features designed for education, which we’ll cover next. For now, here are the key highlights:
