The Panasonic PT-MZ670U is a 6,500-lumen projector with a laser light engine and WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution. It’s designed for classrooms and meeting rooms, and while Panasonic calls it “compact,” it’s still fairly large and heavy—but smaller than many similar high-brightness models on the market.
What makes the MZ670U stand out is its flexibility. It features a replaceable lens system and motorized lens shift, making installation easier and more adaptable. This versatility allows it to be used not only in medium-sized classrooms and boardrooms, but also in larger venues like lecture halls, auditoriums, or houses of worship.
Its list price is $11,999, which is typical for this class of projector, but the actual retail price is around $5,899. That still puts it out of reach for most K-12 schools, especially when some interactive projectors cost $2,000 less. Still, whether or not it’s worth the investment really depends on your specific needs and where it will be used.
In this review, I’ll give you a quick overview, highlight the key features, talk about the hardware, and then dive into its image quality and performance.

Overview
The Panasonic PT-MZ670U arrived at my doorstep on June 8. I had planned to start the review right away, but things took an unexpected turn. Just two weeks earlier, I had an accident—strong winds and a heavy metal door knocked me down, injuring my left hand. Two fingers stopped bending properly, and if you’ve ever looked closely at your hand, you know how interconnected the tendons are. When one finger moves, others follow. Long story short—my entire left hand became useless (and it’s still not fully healed six weeks later).
So when this massive case showed up at my door, I thought, “How am I going to get this inside?” Then I noticed—it had wheels. Thank goodness. I managed to roll it to my front door using my good hand. But then—clunk!—I hit a two-inch step I hadn’t thought about. I tried to lift it using my left arm and my body weight. Big mistake. Bending my arm triggered pain in my injured fingers. Not smart.
Luckily, the UPS driver saw me struggling and helped carry it inside. But I quickly realized I couldn’t lift it onto a shelf by myself. So the projector stayed in its box, waiting to be reviewed.
I kept thinking about writing the review, but these things can be eight pages long—thousands of words—and I couldn’t even sit down for a proper writing session. Now, mid-July, I’m finally writing it—slowly—on an iPad, one word at a time, with help from Siri’s predictive text.
All I can say is: thank goodness for iPads and the Microsoft Word app. Without them, you probably wouldn’t be reading this review anytime soon.
The Panasonic PT-MZ670U features a laser engine and uses 3LCD projection technology — my favorite combo. With 6500 lumens of brightness from the laser engine and the rich colors typical of 3LCD (which means color brightness matches white brightness), I’m excited to see how this projector performs in real life.
Laser projectors usually cost more upfront than lamp-based ones, but they have lower long-term costs. Lamp projectors need more maintenance because their bulbs wear out faster. For example, typical lamp bulbs last between 3,000 and 6,000 hours at full power, and brighter projectors often have even shorter bulb life.
Panasonic’s laser projectors claim up to 20,000 hours of use. Plus, the PT-MZ670U’s filter lasts 20,000 hours and can be cleaned and reused, which is great. It also has some other neat features that I’ll cover on the next page. For now, we’ll look at the hardware, then talk about picture and sound quality, and finally performance. At the end, I’ll sum it up and list the pros and cons so you can decide if the PT-MZ670U fits your business or classroom needs.
