The DWU1400-GS measures 21.9 x 18.9 x 7.5 inches (555 x 480 x 190 mm) and weighs 50.3 lbs (22.8 kg) without a lens. When placed on a table, its lens is right in the center of the front panel, with an IR sensor on the upper right. The sides of the projector are for ventilation—one side pulls air in, and the other pushes hot air out to keep it cool.
The fan noise is rated at 37 to 40 dB, which is quieter than expected for such a bright projector. This noise level won’t bother users in the typical places where this projector is used, as the fans are mostly unnoticeable in those environments.
CHRISTIE INPUTS AND CONNECTIONS
This projector has many input and connection options.
All the inputs, connections, and control panel are located on the back of the projector. You can find a full list of these in the chart below.
LENS
The Christie DWU1400-GS doesn’t come with a lens. But Christie offers seven lenses that work with it, including a special Ultra Short Throw (UST) fixed lens with autofocus. If you use the UST lens, you’ll also need a support bracket to hold its weight and reduce vibration. This keeps the image steady, even if the projector is mounted facing down or sideways.
Besides the UST lens, there are six zoom lenses available for this projector. The chart below shows details and throw ratios for each lens.
The projector allows motorized adjustments for lens position (horizontal and vertical offset), zoom, and focus with compatible lenses.
CHRISTIE TWIST EDGE BLENDING AND WARPING SOFTWARE
The chart above shows the main differences between the three versions of Christie Twist software.
Christie Twist is custom software made by Christie to make warping and blending easier with the DWU1400-GS and other Christie projectors. It helps technicians control multiple projectors to show any image on any surface, keeping the picture aligned and looking right. Twist also lets operators control projectors over a network, with a virtual remote inside the software that works like a normal remote.
Christie Twist is free to download. The Premium and Pro versions cost extra and add more features for bigger, more complex projects. For example, Twist Pro lets you place unlimited setup points for better accuracy.
The Christie Twist family has three software levels, each for different needs. It can handle simple multi-projector setups for flat screens or advanced projection mapping on any surface. It works well for trade shows, classrooms, boardrooms, museums, churches, casinos, and even complex spaces like virtual caves and domes.
CHRISTIE MYSTIQUE CAMERA-BASED AUTO-CALIBRATION
Christie Mystique is an automated system that uses a camera to help quickly set up, align, calibrate, and maintain multiple projectors. When used with any version of Christie Twist, Mystique can automatically adjust images from one or more projectors, even on tricky or oddly shaped screens. This saves a lot of time and effort in big installations.
Christie has now made Mystique work not only with its high-end 3DLP projectors but also with the GS 1DLP series, including the DWU1400-GS reviewed here. Mystique can even handle setups mixing different Christie projector models, like 3DLP and 1DLP, and keep everything aligned perfectly.
There are five versions of Mystique. Like Christie Twist, the basic version is free, and there are four paid editions with extra features for more complex setups and special screen types.
CHRISTIE INTELLIGENT CAMERA (CIC)
The Christie Intelligent Camera (CIC) is a powerful accessory that works with Christie Mystique and Twist to make setup much easier.
When used with the DWU1400-GS and other Christie projectors, the CIC helps speed up the process by automatically focusing the projector and adjusting colors for better image quality. It can even fix colors if the screen isn’t perfectly white, making the picture look just right.

When used with any Mystique software version, the CIC camera makes setting up multi-projector systems easier. It automatically matches color and brightness across projectors and handles warping and blending for up to three projectors in a row.
The CIC is a dual-lens USB camera that comes with a USB cable and brackets for easy mounting. You need one camera for each projector in multi-projector setups, except when using CIC with Mystique software for automated warping and blending.
REMOTE
The remote control has many features but no backlight.
The top has POWER and STANDBY buttons. Below are buttons for GAMMA, BRIGHT, CONTRAST, HOTKEY, PIP, SIZE, LAYOUT, and SWAP. There’s also a numbered keypad that lets you quickly select projector inputs.
Next, there are menu navigation buttons: MENU, RESET, arrow keys, and an ENTER button in the center.
The last section controls KEYSTONE (horizontal and vertical) and LENS SHIFT (horizontal and vertical).
MENUS
The Christie DWU1400-GS has a simple and easy-to-use menu system. It includes all the common settings and advanced options. The menu shown here is just a small part of what’s available. Overall, Christie’s menu is well-organized and easy to navigate.
PERFORMANCE
COLOR
Christie lets users easily adjust the projector’s image settings, including color, as much or as little as they want. Since the DWU1400-GS is a professional projector, its color isn’t as perfectly tuned right out of the box as a home theater projector.
I lowered the projector’s brightness by about 50%, which looked much better than full power in my testing. Even then, it was bright enough to handle ambient room light. The images looked great, with rich colors that really stood out—even with the lights on.
The projector has nine preset picture modes, and users can customize each one. Christie’s guide explains what each mode is for.
Most presets tend to have a bluish tone because projectors set to be very bright often look that way. If you want a warmer image, you can change the color temperature to Warm or Warmest.
Here are the main preset modes:
Video: For theater use. Sets color temperature to 6000K and brightness to 70%.
Bright: For big or very bright spaces. Sets color temperature to 7500K and brightness to 100%.
Enhanced: For rich, vivid colors. Based on Bright mode.
REC709: For HDTV content. Sets color temperature to 6500K and brightness to 80%.
DICOM SIM: For high-contrast images like X-rays. Sets color temperature to 7500K and brightness to 65%.
Blending: For using multiple projectors. Sets color temperature to 7000K and brightness to 85%.
HDR: For high dynamic range content with deep blacks and bright whites using REC.2020 color.
3D: For 3D content.
2D High Speed: For 2D input at 120 Hz.
User: Allows custom settings based on the above modes.
HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE
The DWU1400-GS projector is mainly used in places like colleges, churches, conferences, and smaller entertainment venues to show mostly SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) content. But it also supports HDR10 for better flexibility with High Dynamic Range content.
This projector has four HDR effect settings you can choose from to fine-tune HDR playback:
HDR1: Low HDR effect, makes bright images more colorful.
HDR2: Medium HDR effect, makes standard images look more natural.
HDR3: Medium HDR effect, improves details in videos.
HDR4: Strong HDR effect, enhances details in dark scenes.
TEXT AND PRESENTATION
This projector really shines when showing text and presentations. It’s clearly designed for this, with bright colors and strong contrast that make content easy to see up close or from far away, even in bright rooms. Presentations look great on the Christie DWU1400-GS, no matter the lighting. It also offers seven color space presets: AUTO, RGB, RGB FULL, RGB LIMITED, YUV, REC709, and REC601.
The Christie DWU1400-GS is the brightest projector in Christie’s GS line, rated at 12,000 ANSI lumens. Honestly, it was too bright for my 100-inch screen, so I lowered the brightness by setting it to ECO2 mode.
It’s impressive to see such high brightness, especially since not long ago, 2,000-lumen projectors were the standard for rental houses, auditoriums, and ballrooms.
We couldn’t take brightness measurements this time due to equipment issues. But based on past experience with Christie projectors, their brightness claims are usually accurate. We’ll test again once our gear is fixed and update the review. For now, I can say the light output really impressed me.
The DWU1400-GS is a great choice for large spaces or rooms with a lot of ambient light.
BLACK LEVEL AND SHADOW DETAIL
The biggest strength of the DWU1400-GS—its very high brightness—is also why its black levels are just average. It’s tough for a 12,500 ANSI lumen projector to produce deep, true blacks because of how bright it is.
As expected, the blacks looked more like dark gray. Overall, the contrast and black levels are above average for a 12,000-lumen projector. Christie lists the native contrast ratio at 1,200:1 and dynamic contrast at 6,000:1.
Now, about Christie RealBlack, which claims a contrast of 4,000,000:1. There’s not much info available on how it works. From what I saw in trade show demos, Christie reps mention the high number but don’t explain much.
RealBlack works when the screen is fully black. The projector can then turn off its lasers to show a true black frame. But you won’t get that extreme contrast during normal dark movie scenes with lots of detail. RealBlack mainly helps hide visible lines that sometimes appear when fading to black or blending images from multiple projectors.
For real video watching with dark scenes, expect a dynamic contrast around 6,500:1, which means the blacks look more gray than pure black. This projector isn’t meant for professional cinemas or home theaters, but for the venues it’s designed for, its contrast and black levels will meet most users’ needs.
SUMMARY
Calibrating and recalibrating images on projectors can take a lot of time and skill, especially with multiple projectors. Christie is making this easier with tools like Christie Twist, Mystique, and the Intelligent Camera (CIC). These tools automate alignment, calibration, and monitoring, so even complex setups can be done quickly without needing expert technicians.
The DWU1400-GS comes with nine preset picture modes, which is a lot for a professional projector. It also has two ECO modes to save power: ECO1 runs at 80% brightness, and ECO2 at 50%—I used ECO2 for most of my tests.
With a powerful 12,000 ANSI lumens rating, the DWU1400-GS is very bright—too bright for my small test screen but perfect for medium to large venues with uncontrolled lighting.
Christie’s RealBlack tech claims to boost contrast from 6,000:1 to an impressive 4,000,000:1 on paper, but in real use, expect around 6,000:1 dynamic contrast for dark scenes with detail.
The projector supports 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2, so it can handle 4K at 60fps and HDR content. While HDR is more common in home projectors, it’s great to see Christie supporting it in this professional model.
