Epson PowerLite L400U Installation Laser Projector Review

The Epson PowerLite L400U is a WUXGA (1920 x 1200) 3LCD laser projector designed for bigger meeting rooms and higher education settings. WUXGA is basically the business and education equivalent of 1080p, with full 1080p support. Priced at $2,499, this projector delivers great color, bright images, and sharp clarity—making it a solid choice for medium auditoriums and large university lecture halls. Epson rates it at 4,500 lumens, so it handles bright rooms with ease. It also has an RJ-45 network port for easy integration into existing networks and supports an optional wireless module for WiFi. Once connected, you can stream directly from Android or iOS devices using Epson’s free iProjection app. Plus, it supports USB mass storage for added convenience.

The L400U is part of Epson’s PowerLite L Series, which includes six other models. Epson dominates the projector market with around 50% share, so it’s no surprise they offer a wide range. The family includes WXGA models like the L500W ($1,999) and L610W ($2,599), the L610 XGA at $2,399, and WUXGA models L510U ($2,799), L610U, and L615U ($3,499). Brightness ranges from 4,500 lumens up to a powerful 6,000 lumens, with vertical lens shift and a 1.60:1 zoom ratio for flexible placement.

At $2,499, the L400U is the most affordable WUXGA laser projector we’ve reviewed so far. And the L500 at $1,999 is tied for the least expensive WXGA laser projector we’ve tested.

This projector is part of Epson’s PowerLite L Series, which includes six other models with varying resolutions and brightness levels. Prices range from $1,999 for the WXGA L500W to $3,499 for the high-end L615U. Brightness across the series spans from 4,500 to an impressive 6,000 lumens, and all models offer vertical lens shift and a 1.60:1 zoom ratio for flexible installation.

At $2,499, the L400U is the most affordable WUXGA laser projector we’ve reviewed so far, making it a great option for medium-sized auditoriums and large lecture halls that need bright, sharp images with reliable performance.

The L400U measures 5.35 inches tall, 17.32 inches wide, and 11.97 inches deep, weighing 17.1 pounds. It’s designed for use in higher education classrooms, lecture halls, or large meeting rooms, usually ceiling-mounted. With vertical lens shift and a 1.60:1 zoom lens, it offers good flexibility for different setups—an important feature in bigger spaces.

This bright projector can project images up to 500 inches diagonally. But here’s the catch: the bigger the image, the less bright it gets. While it can technically display a 500-inch image, the brightness loss would be huge. People needing images that large usually look for projectors with 10,000 to 25,000 lumens or more, costing $15,000 to $20,000 or higher. So, in real life, you’ll be using the L400U on much smaller screens for the best results.
