Maxell MP-JU4001 3LCD Laser WUXGA Business Projector Review

Maxell has expanded its laser projector lineup with the MP-JU4001, a 4,000 ANSI lumen 3LCD projector made for classrooms and conference rooms. It uses a laser phosphor light source that lasts about 20,000 hours in normal mode. Since it has no lamp to replace, it needs very little maintenance, lowering overall costs. A new phosphor chip replaces the old phosphor wheel and motor, meaning fewer moving parts and better reliability. Maxell says this projector delivers equal brightness for white and all colors, giving more accurate colors and sharp images. The MP-JU4001 also features a new cooling system that keeps dust out of the optics and reduces noise. It comes with a five-year warranty on parts and labor for extra peace of mind.

Overview

The MP-JU4001 is part of Maxell’s 3LCD projector lineup, designed to offer great performance for conference rooms, boardrooms, or classrooms without a high price tag. With up to 4,000 lumens and a reliable laser light engine, it’s a solid choice for those needing a mid-brightness business projector.

It has a native WUXGA resolution (1920 x 1200) but can accept 1080p@30Hz content. For K-12 education, WXGA resolution is usually enough, with higher resolutions like WUXGA mainly needed for special classes such as video production, photography, or graphic design. Higher education might use WUXGA more often, but 4K is rare except in fields like medical imaging, science, simulation, architecture, and design.

Maxell rates its dynamic contrast ratio at 2,000,000:1. Like all 3LCD projectors, the MP-JU4001 delivers equal brightness for color and white, ensuring bright and vibrant images in meeting rooms, classrooms, or mid-sized lecture halls. The laser engine lasts up to 20,000 hours in normal mode.

This Maxell 3LCD projector competes in a market mostly led by laser DLP projectors, which could be its biggest advantage.

Let’s start with the basics. The Maxell MP-JU4001 is a 3LCD projector priced under $2,000, retailing at $1,829. Its 3LCD technology offers clear advantages over DLP systems. Unlike many DLP projectors, it doesn’t use a color wheel, which helps produce better images, especially in rooms where controlling ambient light is tough. Not every meeting room or classroom can have blackout curtains—sometimes just blinds are the only option. This projector handles those conditions well.

Though not as powerful as its bigger sibling, the MP-WU5503, and nearly $1,200 cheaper, the MP-JU4001 still offers a wide range of features. In my experience, it delivers excellent performance for an education projector in this price range and category. Let’s look closer at the Maxell MP-JU4001 for education and business use.
