4K/120: Why it matters
At 120 Hz, frame time is 8.33 ms (vs 16.67 ms at 60 Hz). Camera pans look smoother and input feels tighter. On a projector, the bigger field of view makes judder more obvious—higher refresh fixes that without turning every scene into soap-opera video.
Requirements checklist
To actually see 4K/120 from a console you need:
HDMI 2.1 (FRL) on both ends (console → projector). Ultra High Speed HDMI cable required. See HDMI 2.1 basics at hdmi.org.
A projector that accepts 4K/120. Many models do it with 4:2:0 chroma or e-shift; gameplay is fine, tiny UI text may look softer.
Game/Low-Lag mode that disables motion processing (MEMC).
Optional but useful: ALLM (auto low-latency mode) and VRR (variable refresh rate).

Input-lag targets
Choose a projector that hits these targets at the mode you plan to use:
4K/120: ≤ 16 ms (competitive), ≤ 20 ms acceptable.
4K/60: ≤ 33 ms good for cinematic play; lower is better.
1080p/120: ≤ 16 ms is a sweet spot if your model drops to 1080p for high refresh.

Setup steps (PS5 & XSX)
Cabling & ports
Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Plug into the projector’s HDMI 2.1 port.
For audio, connect your soundbar/AVR via eARC and enable passthrough/Game mode to avoid extra delay.
Console settings (high-level)
PS5: Set Performance Mode in game presets. In Video Output, set 120 Hz to Automatic; enable VRR if supported.
Xbox Series X: TV & Display → 4K UHD + 120 Hz; tick Allow 4K, HDR, and VRR.
If text looks soft at 4K/120 (4:2:0), switch to 4K/60 for menus or 1080p/120 for shooters.

Buying tips
Lag first. Ask for measured ms at 4K/120 and 4K/60 Game mode.
Ports matter. Look for HDMI 2.1, ALLM/VRR, and eARC.
Chroma trade-off. 4:2:0 at 4K/120 is normal; gameplay feels fine, but tiny text softens.
Room control. A gray screen or UST ALR improves perceived contrast far more than small lumen differences.
Avoid keystone. Place the projector correctly; keystone adds processing and can add lag.
Troubleshooting
Black screen or handshake loops at 4K/120: Try a shorter Ultra High Speed cable; toggle VRR; power-cycle both devices.
Soft UI text at 4K/120: That’s 4:2:0 chroma. Use 4K/60 for menu-heavy games or 1080p/120 for shooters.

Do I need HDMI 2.1 for 4K/120?
Yes. Native 4K/120 on consoles requires HDMI 2.1 bandwidth (FRL) on the projector and cable.
Why does 4K/120 look softer than 4K/60?
Many projectors accept 4K/120 at 4:2:0 chroma to fit bandwidth limits. Gameplay is smooth; small text is crisper at 4K/60.
What input-lag is acceptable for console play?
Target ≤ 16 ms at 120 Hz. For story games at 4K/60, ≤ 33 ms is fine.
Can UST do 4K/120?
Some USTs prioritise 4K/60 and 1080p/120. If 4K/120 is a must, check specs and real measurements carefully.
Will VRR fix high input lag?
No. VRR smooths frame-time spikes but doesn’t lower baseline latency.
